Mouse and graphical interface
Engelbart's 1968 demo showed mouse, windows and hypertext; Xerox PARC and Apple turned it into the desktop everyone uses.
Open in the interactive tree →On 9 December 1968 Douglas Engelbart showed the mouse, on-screen windows, hypertext links and shared editing to a live audience in San Francisco. Xerox PARC built the Alto in 1973 with bitmapped windows and icons, and Apple's Lisa (1983) and Macintosh (1984) brought the idea to buyers. It made computers usable without training, and touch screens later carried the same direct-manipulation logic onto phones.
