REM sleep discovered
Aserinsky and Kleitman found in 1953 that sleep cycles through stages, including rapid-eye-movement sleep, when most vivid dreams occur.
Open in the interactive tree →EEG recordings showed brain activity in REM sleep that resembles waking, and William Dement and Nathaniel Kleitman later described the stages and the cycle of about 90 minutes. This opened sleep medicine and the study of sleep disorders.
