The mind came to be studied as an information-processing system, ending the dominance of behaviorism.
Open in the interactive tree →At a symposium at MIT in September 1956, George Miller, Noam Chomsky, Allen Newell and Herbert Simon presented work that treated thinking as computation, in the same year as the Dartmouth AI workshop. Cognitive science linked psychology, linguistics, computing and neuroscience. It opened the road to testable models of memory, attention and language, and later to artificial intelligence.
