Split-brain studies

After surgeons cut the link between a patient's brain halves in 1961, Sperry and Gazzaniga showed that each half can perceive and act without the other knowing.

The tests showed that speech runs mostly in the left hemisphere and spatial tasks more in the right; Roger Sperry shared the 1981 Nobel Prize. Later work found the halves cooperate far more than the popular left-brain, right-brain picture suggests.
