Brain localization (Broca)
Damage to specific brain areas causes specific losses, such as speech, so functions have addresses.
Open in the interactive tree →In 1861 Paul Broca examined the brain of a patient who could say only 'tan' and found a lesion in the left frontal lobe; Carl Wernicke described an area for understanding language in 1874. The 1848 accident of the railroad worker Phineas Gage showed that personality depends on the frontal lobes. Mapping the brain through lesions is the ancestor of modern imaging.
