Three domains of life
Carl Woese's ribosomal RNA comparisons showed in 1977 that archaea are a separate branch from bacteria, redrawing the tree of life into three domains.
Open in the interactive tree →Woese and George Fox found that methane-producing microbes differ from bacteria as much as bacteria differ from animals. In 1990 Woese, Otto Kandler and Mark Wheelis named the three domains Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya.
