Cosmic Microwave Background
Penzias and Wilson find (1964) a faint radio glow from every direction: the afterglow of the hot early universe.
Open in the interactive tree →Predicted in 1948 by Alpher and Herman, the 2.7 K radiation ended the debate with steady-state cosmology. The satellites COBE, WMAP and Planck mapped its tiny ripples and fixed the age of the universe at 13.8 billion years and its content of dark matter and dark energy.
