Sign Language Schools

Abbé de l'Épée opens a free school for deaf pupils in Paris (about 1760) and teaches in their own signs.

He treated sign as a real language, and teachers from the Paris school carried French Sign Language abroad; Laurent Clerc brought it to the US, where it shaped American Sign Language. Linguists such as Stokoe (1960) later showed that sign languages have full grammars.
