Public Museum
The British Museum (founded 1753, opened 1759) is the first national public museum.
Open in the interactive tree →Built on Hans Sloane's collection, it and the Louvre (opened 1793) turned princely cabinets of curiosities into public institutions. Museums preserve, catalogue and exhibit objects, and their collections gave archaeology and natural history their material.
