After Grotefend and Rawlinson, independent translators agree on a test text (1857): Akkadian and Sumerian become readable.
Open in the interactive tree →Grotefend identified Old Persian royal names in 1802, Rawlinson copied the trilingual Behistun inscription, and in 1857 Rawlinson, Hincks, Oppert and Talbot delivered matching translations to the Royal Asiatic Society. Assyriology then recovered Sumerian, Akkadian and the Epic of Gilgamesh.
