Portland Cement
Joseph Aspdin's patent of 1824 for a strong hydraulic cement made from burned limestone and clay produces the binder of modern concrete.
Open in the interactive tree →Roman hydraulic concrete was largely forgotten; Portland cement, burned at higher temperature in the 1840s, brought back reliable strong concrete. Today cement production is also one of the largest industrial sources of CO2.
Prerequisites
- Mortar & Roman Concrete~200 BC
Unlocks
- Concrete & Reinforced Concrete1867Reinforced concrete needs a strong, reliable hydraulic cement
- Cement with CO2 Capture2025The process that captures CO2 is the Portland cement kiln
- CO2-Free CementopenCO2-free cement replaces the Portland cement chemistry
- Climate-Neutral Construction2040s?Cement making is the main source of emissions in construction
