Long-term potentiation
Bliss and Lømo showed in 1973 that brief intense activity strengthens synapses for hours or days: a cellular trace of memory.
Open in the interactive tree →Terje Lømo noticed in the hippocampus of rabbits in 1966 that a burst of stimulation made synapses respond more strongly for hours; with Tim Bliss he published the finding in 1973 as long-term potentiation. It showed physically what Hebb had predicted and gave memory research a measurable mechanism, later traced to NMDA receptors. Whether LTP is how memories are stored in the living brain is still being tested.
